New Host Families

Have a Break had a busy 2008, we successfully recruited 3 new host families. They completed a 6 week training programme including a family day where children from new and existing host families and children with disabilities enjoyed lots of fun and activities.

National Home Sharing Network

The Have a Break scheme continues to be a member of the National Home Sharing Network. This is an umbrella group for schemes facilitating short breaks by host carers countrywide.

The National Home Sharing Network plans to host an International Short Break Conference in June 2010 which it hopes will raise the profile and importance of home sharing short breaks in Ireland.

Have a Break 21st Celebration!

The scheme was founded in Limerick in 1987 by a group of professionals who were working with children with disabilities. This year to celebrate its 21st birthday the Have a Break scheme held a party in Limerick City in November.

Deputy Jan O’Sullivan T.D opened the evening. She spoke about the merits of the scheme and wished us well for the future.

Two founding members attended the celebrations and also two host families who have been involved for the past 21 years with Have a Break.

Many others including parents, children, host carers and professionals also attended. Presentations were made to founder members and host families. A great night was had by all!!!

The Have a Break Committee held its Annual General Meeting in December 2008 at St Vincent’s Centre Lisnagry. This was attended by parents, host carers and committee members.

The committee was happy to report an increase in placements during 2008 thus providing more breaks for more children in the area.

A new committee was elected and welcomed Patricia Hallinan host carer as our new Public Relations Officer.

The committee are looking forward to promoting and developing this scheme in 2009.
